Hi Everyone, last night at youth group we disected the song by Hillsong called Hosanna, one of my favourite songs. We were talking about how important it is to think about the songs we sing, the words they contain and the meanings behind them …
Below are my notes and thoughts on this, please note they are my thoughts and my interpretations of the verses in the song, I would love to hear other peoples thoughts on this … they are also notes so not complete but I thought it would be good to share them as a reminder for those that were there and for the interest of those that weren’t there …
If you were there and want to comment on what we discussed in groups last night then please do! There were some really good comments and links with bible verses so I’d love you to share!
Hillsong – Hosanna, what are we singing, cell group
Break off into groups and each group is given a verse to dissect and then share with the others about how they see it being explained in more detail…what are we really singing and committing to.
I see the king of glory
Coming on the clouds with fire
The whole earth shakes
The whole earth shakes
The king of great honour, majesty and splendour
I linked the second line with Revelation 1v7 where it is talking about Jesus returning and he is coming back and everyone will see him, the fire represents power and the whole earth shaking a fear of Jesus but the fear is different depending on your faith!
I see his love and mercy
Washing over all our sin
The people sing
The people sing
Jesus’ love and mercy (compassion) cleansing all our Sin, as we are freed from the bondage of our sin we sing and rejoice. We’re celebrating
Hosanna
A shout of passionate praise to God
[here begins my two favourite verses .. if we are singing this wholeheartedly I just think it is sooooo powerful!]
I see a generation
Rising up to take their place
With selfless faith
With selfless faith
For me this is a prayer about a generation of people young or old growing (spiritually) into their calling to serve Jesus in whatever he calls them to do and putting it before anything else. But for this to be my prayer I believe that I have to be part of it, I want to do what God has for me as a priority, it is about being selfless which in today’s world makes no sense to anyone … but if we really want to see change then we need selfless people to put God’s Kingdom before their own ..
I see a near revival
Stirring as we pray and seek
We’re on our knees
We’re on our knees
this is talking about seeing the possibility of a revival but to see it we need to praying it and seeking it on our knees, but that is just repeating the words. Let’s break it up
Stirring – I believe this is talking about other people seeing this possibility
Pray – praying to see God moving more in this area, healings, people being saved…
Seek – finding out and focussing on the will of God, how does God see this area, and linking to another line of the song what is his heart for this area?
We’re on our knees – this could literally be us on our knees but actually I see this as a sign of vulnerability and desperation, we WANT to see God move and we are willing to drop to our knees
Heal my heart and make it clean
Open up my eyes to the things unseen
Show me how to love like you have loved me
I believe these lines are effectively three steps
Step 1) forgiveness, acknowledge that we are sinners and ask God to make it right again
Step 2) Show us more of Jesus, draw us closer to him and/or show us his heart, his plan and what he is doing.
Step 3) Show us how to love in the best way possible, true un-conditional love can ONLY come from God and we are asking Him to show us how to love like that so we can become more like him.
Break my heart from what breaks yours
Everything I am for your kingdoms cause
As I go from nothing to Eternity
This is a powerful verse, let’s break it up into 3
- 1. Break my heart – this is about wanting to hurt when Jesus hurts, wanting to have a passion for what Jesus has a passion for, being able to relate to the pain of others
- 2. This links with the selfless line, everything I am for your Kingdoms cause .. you can ONLY sing this if you are willing to give up everything for God, that means EVERYTHING! Job, relationship, money, house, the UK … EVERYTHING means EVERYTHING … not EVERYTHING that you WANT to give up but EVERYTHING you have!
- 3. We’re going from earth to heaven … we want to do all this while we are on earth .. when we get to heaven everything changes J
Hosanna in the highest
Praise him passionately in the best way possible
