I had an interesting discussion tonight with a few friends about how society and culture has changed over the years and how it affects us as individuals and in many cases without us even realising it.
What do we find acceptable when it comes to things like
- the clothes we wear
- the language we use
- the music we listen to
- the films or tv we watch
- the things we talk about
- the way we act
tonight we talked about how appropriate some of these things are as Christians but it also got me thinking that it is things like this that in some ways define us as individuals. People that meet us for the first time will judge us and form an opinion on us based on what they see of us, initially the things we wear and the way we speak, then as they get to know us more they will form opinions based on other things they get to know about us, e.g. music we like and the films we go to see, how we spend our time.
Only those that we really get close to will get to know the ‘real’ us … And what truly matters, but by then it might be too late …
We could argue all night long about whether it is right for people to form opinions in this way but the fact is that’s life, and we are all guilty of it … But as individuals we need to be aware of our how people see us and what that says about us. I always wear jeans … What does that say about me?!
